Kandy Esala Perahera: A First-Timer's Guide

Everything you need to know about Asia's grandest Buddhist festival.

Every July or August, Kandy erupts into ten nights of fire dancers, whip crackers, Kandyan drummers and over a hundred lavishly costumed elephants — the Esala Perahera, Asia's grandest Buddhist festival and a living pageant that has run for more than 1,500 years.

What actually happens

The procession honours the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, carried in a golden casket on the back of the majestic tusker elephant. Each night the parade grows larger, culminating in the final Randoli Perahera nights — the ones worth planning a whole trip around.

Tips for first-timers

  • Book seats early. Pavement space is free but claimed hours ahead; reserved seating along the route is worth every rupee.
  • Arrive by late afternoon. Roads close early and the city fills fast.
  • Dress respectfully — shoulders and knees covered is the safe rule near the temple.
  • Stay two nights. Combine the festival with the Temple of the Tooth and Peradeniya gardens by day.

The dates shift with the lunar calendar each year — ask us and we'll plan your itinerary around the best nights.
