How to Plan the Perfect 7-Day Sri Lanka Itinerary
Culture, tea country, wildlife and beach — how to fit the island's greatest hits into one week.
One week in Sri Lanka is tight but glorious — the island is compact, and with a private chauffeur guide you can cover its greatest hits without ever feeling rushed.
The classic route
- Days 1–2: Cultural Triangle. Land, recover in Negombo, then head to Sigiriya. Climb the rock at sunrise, safari at Minneriya in the afternoon.
- Day 3: Kandy. Golden caves of Dambulla en route, evening ritual at the Temple of the Tooth.
- Day 4: The famous train. Ride the blue train through tea country to Ella — window seat, left side.
- Day 5: Ella. Little Adam's Peak at dawn, Nine Arches Bridge, tea factory tour.
- Days 6–7: South coast. Drive down to Galle Fort for golden-hour ramparts, finish with beach time and (in season) blue whales at Mirissa.
Three rules of thumb
- Don't overpack the map. Sri Lankan roads are slow and scenic; two hotels beat five.
- Go with the season — see our month-by-month guide for which coast is dry.
- Leave one afternoon empty. The best moments on the island are the unplanned ones.
