Galle

A 17th-century Dutch fort city on the southern coast.

Galle Fort is a perfectly preserved 17th-century Dutch colonial town wrapped in massive stone ramparts on Sri Lanka's south coast — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where lighthouse, mosque, churches and boutique-filled lanes share a single square kilometre.

Walk the walls at golden hour as locals leap from the bastions into the sea, browse galleries and gem shops along Pedlar Street, and watch stilt fishermen balance over the surf on the coast nearby. Galle pairs beautifully with the beaches of Unawatuna and Mirissa next door.
